These are little creatures that we don’t always pay attention to, but which prove very useful to the garden and to nature in general. However, today they are great danger.

This is why the young elected officials of the Municipal Children’s Council of Vaires-sur-Marne (Seine-et-Marne) decided to mobilize for hedgehogs, by launching, during the February 2024 holidays, a large collection which was intended for them. They were able to deliver these donations to thePiqu’épique associationbased in Chevreuse (), April 24, 2024.

“Hedgehogs need it”

The idea of the collection was born in the mind of Leonor-Victoria, when she was five years old. “With my parents, when I was small, we often collected hedgehogs, I kept the idea in mindand when I arrived at the CME, I proposed it to my classmates,” the little girl remembers.

During meetings of its committeein which seven children sit, she manages to convince his colleagues of the relevance of his project and publicizes the cause of hedgehogs. She thus embarks Assia, Alyah, Marwa And Juliet, present at the donation delivery, in his adventure.

A collection is therefore launched between February 26 and March 8, in order to collect as many products as possible. “We asked to have cleaning products, but also dishwashing liquid and paper towels for cleaning the cages. We also asked for croquettes for cats, to feed the hedgehogs,” explain the four young elected officials.

Satisfied with the result of their collection, they received a total of twenty-one bags of kibble, ten packets of paper towels, or even twenty-two cans of cleaning products, as well as a packet of sponges. ” We knows that hedgehogs need all of this. We were able to talk about it at school, to our friends. We are with our investment,” they rejoice.

An animal on the verge of extinction

If the collection for the benefit of hedgehogs has so much meaning for these young girls, it is because the animal is now in great danger. Indeed, he is suffering the full brunt of the consequences of the modern world. “The animal is endangered. It is complicated for him to defend himself, he faces the decline in the number of insectson which it feeds, and on the rise of the concreting. He must also fight against cars, he is poisoned by weedkilling products Or slug repellent, and is attacked by automatic lawn mowers,” says the representative of the Piqu’épique association.

Moreover, the encounter was an opportunity for the children to learn a little more about this animal that is so close, but so little known. “How do they make babies?” “, ” What are they eating ? » or even “how much does it weigh?” » were the children’s questions. And they were notably able to learn that a hedgehog does not drink cow’s milk, and that it can kill it. Another of the perils that await this small mammalfriend of gardeners.
