Matam, May 4 (APS) – The Minister of Energy, Oil and Mines, Biram Soulèye Diop, is expected on Tuesday in the Matam region for a visit to the operating area of the Ndendory phosphate mine , in the department of Kanel (north-east), we learned from an official Source.

After visiting the mine operated by the Société Minière de la Vallée (SOMIVA), Biram Soulèye Diop will meet representatives of the neighboring communities, we can read in a circular letter from the governor of the region, Mouhamadou Moctar Watt.

Discussions are also planned with stakeholders in the dispute on compensation for local populations impacted by mining.

The latter continue to demand compensation from SOMIVA, which they accuse of exploiting fields belonging to them for compensation that they consider ”insignificant”.

More than 1000 field owners are affected, equivalent to a total area of 127 hectares.

Due to this dispute over the amount of compensation, the regional executive recently decided to suspend the operation of the mine until further notice.
