(Toronto) The federal government will provide $104 million to the city of Toronto to help it host six FIFA World Cup matches in 2026.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow and federal Sports Minister Carla Qualtrough announced the funding Friday at BMO Field in Toronto, where the games will be played.

Toronto estimated that its share of hosting the competition would cost $380 million, an increase of $80 million from the 2022 forecast.

In February, the provincial government committed to providing $97 million for the event.

Vancouver will also host matches at this World Cup which will take place in Canada, the United States and Mexico.

Officials announced Tuesday that hosting seven World Cup matches at BC Place Stadium could cost as much as $581 million, more than double the estimate two years ago.

The federal government has committed to providing $116 million to finance the matches that will be presented in Vancouver.
