“We still always recommend that Belgian citizens register on TravellersOnline or with our embassy in Beirut, and leave Lebanon as quickly as possible. This is still possible through commercial means, Middle Eastern Airlines still operates flights,” indicates the FPS Foreign Affairs, which says it is examining and preparing “the different possible scenarios”.
Some 1,800 Belgian nationals are currently in the country.
Several countries have organized evacuations of their nationals residing in Lebanon. France notably set sail on Monday a French navy ship to preposition itself off the coast of Lebanon as a “precaution”. Germany, for its part, sent a military plane to Beirut to evacuate employees of the German embassy in Lebanon and their families. Employees of other German organizations, as well as their families, and nationals threatened for medical reasons must also be repatriated. The United Kingdom has chartered a commercial flight for its nationals who wish to evacuate Lebanon. Canada has reserved 800 seats on commercial flights to help its nationals leave Lebanon.
