A page could turn for Senegalese football with the possible departure of Aliou Cissé from his position as national coach. According to credible sources relayed by the media Sud Quotidien, the non-renewal of Aliou Cissé’s contract is about to be made official, a decision heavily influenced by the Minister of Sports, despite a clear desire of the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) to keep it until 2026.

Aliou Cissé marked his time at the head of the Téranga Lions with memorable moments, notably the conquest of the African Cup of Nations in 2021, a first in the history of Senegal. However, this collaboration could soon come to an end due to recent performances deemed insufficient during the qualifiers for CAN 2025, where Senegal was notably held in check by Burkina Faso (1-1) and suffered a surprising defeat against in Burundi (0-1).

This Wednesday, the Federation should officially communicate the decision. Aliou Cissé, in office for almost a decade, has been able to embody leadership which has often borne fruit, but the pressures resulting from mixed results have apparently weighed heavily in the balance. This potential change at the head of the national team could mark a turning point in Senegal’s sporting strategy, while eyes are already turned towards future international competitions.
