If the sun did not come back, wrote Charles Ferdinand Ramuz. An admirer of the Vaudois author, Yves Magat was inspired by the title of this novel for his latest documentary: If the glaciers did not return. A wink but also a somewhat… daring connection. Because sun and glacier do not necessarily go well together. One is getting hotter and hotter, the other is melting more and more. A thousand small glaciers have already disappeared in the Alps. “At the end of this century, it is likely that the great ones will also have all disappeared,” estimates Yves Magat.

For the purposes of his film, the Genevan surveyed the Plaine Morte glacier in 2023, above Crans-Montana, at an altitude of 3,000 m, one of the largest in the Alps. The glaciologist Matthias Huss, from the University of Fribourg, who guided him, took measurements on site: “The ice layer has lost more than 2 meters in one year, which is a lot considering that we are in its highest part.” He continues: “The main factor in the retreat of Alpine glaciers is the increase in heat in summer.”
