The “colossal” construction site of the footbridge of the SNCF station Valves (Morbihan) requires a unusual crane. It is delivered as a “kit” via around fifty trucks.

A crane that goes up to 78 meters

The crane comes from the Dufour company. “There are few cranes of this type. They go all over Europe for extraordinary projects,” says Pierre Desbois, in charge of the multimodal exchange hub at station.

The crane is 650 tonnes. It rises to 78 meters. It is higher than the Prat water tower.

“One week to assemble the crane”

“Between 40 and 50 heavy goods vehicles will transport a crane. It will be necessary a week to assemble it”, reveals Pierre Desbois.

Trucks should arrive from Wed-October 2024. The crane operation will take place during the All Saints’ Day weekend, on the night of November 1 to 2, 2024.

  • first week of vacation: assembly of the crane
  • second week: creation of the “quay” supports during the night
  • “operation punches” for the craning of the three spans during the night of November 1st to 2nd.

Hundreds of tons to lift

One of the footbridge structures weighs 170 tons. The three sections form the 62 meter long deck. The footbridge will be 7 meters above the railway tracks.

“The crane operation itself doesn’t take long. But there are 4 hours of preparation. There are three bays and elevators. There is also a question of counterweight (superlift) to manage,” indicates Pierre Desbois on the complexity of the operation.
