The deputy spokesperson for the Alliance Pour la République (APR), Abdou Mbow, strongly criticized the new regime in place this Sunday during his intervention on I Radio. According to him, the current government seems to be “looking for the little beast everywhere” in the run-up to the next elections, in what he considers to be a maneuver to avoid an electoral defeat.
Abdou Mbow pointed out flagrant violations of the law, particularly with regard to the decree convening the electorate for the upcoming elections. “They violated the law with the decree summoning the electoral body. There is a flagrant violation of the law,” he insisted. For him, the electoral process is marred by numerous irregularities which make the holding of the elections, on the date initially scheduled, problematic.
In his speech, Abdou Mbow also expressed deep concerns about the future of Senegalese democracy. He believes that the current government, if it manages to obtain a majority, could lead the country towards an authoritarian regime. “These people are not legalists and giving them a majority is synonymous with installing dictatorship in this country,” he warned. He fears that the next elections will be among “the most poorly organized actions in the history of the country”, endangering the very foundations of Senegalese democracy.
Faced with what he describes as an authoritarian drift, Abdou Mbow calls on the people to mobilize to counter this “machine that is running amok”. According to him, the opposition must intensify its efforts to establish a broad and powerful coalition capable of confronting the regime in place. He maintains that cohabitation in the National Assembly is necessary to limit the power of the government and restore a democratic balance.
