The tunnel project under the Strait of Gibraltar has recently resurfaced. The Spanish government has launched a call for tenders for the purchase of four seismometers which will make it possible to study the seabed of the Strait of Gibraltar as part of the project to build a tunnel to connect Spain and Morocco, a project which dates from 1980, report the Spanish media.

It is the Spanish Study Company for Fixed Communication across the Strait of Gibraltar (Secegsa), under the supervision of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, which made public the call for tenders for the acquisition of four seismometers on the public procurement platform. Once acquired and delivered to the Royal Institute and the Marine Observatory of San Fernando (Cádiz), these devices will allow seismotectonic research to be carried out in the Strait of Gibraltar “Captain Manuel Catalán Morollón”, for six months.

In 1980, Spain and Morocco had concluded an agreement on the Europe-Africa Fixed Link Project, under which two national companies were established to study the feasibility of the project. These are SECEGSA, on the Spanish side, and the National Society for the Study of the Strait of Gibraltar (SNED) on the Moroccan side.
