SENEGAL-MINES-GOUVERNANCE / Matam: citizen coalitions equipped for better monitoring of the commitments of mining companies – Senegalese press agency

Ndendory, April 26 (APS) – The NGO 3 D wants to contribute to better equipping members of citizen participatory coalitions (CPC) in the Matam region (north), for better monitoring of the commitments of mining companies for the benefit of the populations and of the local authorities concerned.

To do this, it organized a planning workshop for the activities of mining companies in Orkadiéré, Hamady Hounaré, Ndendory and Thilogne, in the departments of Matam and Kanel.

Scheduled for three days, this workshop, which started on Thursday, will give citizen participatory coalitions the opportunity to develop their annual action plan for “monitoring the exploitation of phosphates in the region”.

”Our objective is to equip members of citizen participatory coalitions so that they have the means to monitor the commitments of mining companies for the benefit of populations and local authorities who are impacted by the exploitation of natural resources, within the framework of “planning activities,” explained Ousmane Ba, focal point of the NGO 3D.

“We will also allow them to follow priority projects carried out by local authorities,” said Mr. Ba, adding that planning activities will be carried out within the framework of the Traces program, carried out by the NGO 3D.

With the support of this NGO, six citizen participatory coalitions were set up in seven municipalities in the region where phosphate is exploited.

These are Orkadiéré, Ndendory, Hamady Hounaré, Wendou Bosseabé, Wali Diala and Polel Diaobé, in the department of Kanel, but also the municipalities of Thilogne, Dabia, Oréfondé and Agnam, in Bosséa.

After Hamady Hounaré and Orkadiéré on Thursday, Ndendory on Friday, a final workshop will be held on Saturday in Thilogne, for the citizen participatory coalitions of Bosséa.
