Saumon Québec is organizing a free “Discovery Day” on the banks of the Moisie River

Several activities on the salmon cycle, Atlantic, Innu traditions and fly fishing will be offered on the Mishta Shipu on May 25.

The Quebec Atlantic Salmon Federation is joining forces with Shakutaimu and Pêche au feminine for a fly fishing familiarization activity accessible to all. The Salmon Quebec Discovery Day will be held on May 25 at the Innu-Nikamu Festival site and at the Scandinavian Chalet on the banks of the Moisie River.

The event will allow visitors to enjoy the ecosystem of the majestic Mishta Shipu and Innu traditions. A busy day awaits the participants.

Important place for ladies

Several workshops will be offered free of charge. They will focus, among other things, on the salmon cycle, medicinal plants, canoe making using traditional Innu methods and fly fishing training. Musicians will be present on site throughout the day. This will conclude with the broadcast of the Salmon Quebec Fly Fishing Film Festival.

Particular attention is paid to highlighting women. Both of the event’s partner companies are run by women. Saumon Québec is committed to ensuring that at least half of the speakers and facilitators are women, both indigenous and non-indigenous. The fly casting activities will be led by Joannie from Pêche au feminine and Audrey Ringuette from Shakutaimu.

An opportunity to share

The event aims to promote exchanges between indigenous and non-indigenous people. The organizers believe that by sharing everyone’s knowledge, it will be possible to better understand the issues surrounding salmon fishing in the Moisie River, which worry fishermen.

By disseminating all the information necessary for good fishing practice, we hope to allow the continuation of sport fishing and ancestral food fishing while preserving the resource. The day will also provide training for the next generation of salmon sport fishers in the region.
