A work of art erected in Geneva so as not to forget slavery

“Assume a work of memory and transparency around all facets of our common history.” This is the aim of the Administrative Council of the City of Geneva in launching a process to erect “a work of art to commemorate the memory of slavery”. This approach also aims to highlight the role that Geneva played in the transatlantic slave trade. An initiative which responds to various requests made by associations committed against anti-Black racism in recent years.

The monument, which will be installed in a public space, will be the subject of an artistic competition, the details of which will soon be specified. It will also be erected in memory of personalities who were victims of persecution, or even killed, because of their commitment to human rights.

Finally, the Administrative Council adopted, on Thursday, an action plan which aims to respond to the issues, both memorial and the fight against racism, posed by the tributes paid in public spaces to personalities who have encouraged racism and colonialism. This will be presented on May 6, during a press conference.
