The Senegalese Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, officially resigned from his position as mayor of the commune of Ziguinchor (Casamance, southern Senegal), which he had held since the municipal and departmental elections of January 2022, it was reported on Monday from official sources.

The governor of the Ziguinchor region, Mor Talla Tine, confirmed the news specifying “having acknowledged receipt of a letter from the Minister of Territorial Communities, Planning and Territorial Development, notifying him of the resignation of the now ex-mayor of the city”.

This resignation of Sonko from his elective mandate obeys a directive from President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, asking any member of the new government installed on April 5, who holds elective mandates (local authorities, National Assemblies), to resign from their functions within one month.

In this wake, the Minister of Labor and Relations with Institutions, Yankhoba Diémé, resigned from his position as president of the Departmental Council of Bignona (south).

Energy Minister Birame Souleye Diop, who co-founded the ruling Pastef party, also resigned from the Thiès-Nord town hall, according to Ousseynou Ly, presidential spokesperson.

Ministers holding an elective mandate had until Sunday May 5 to withdraw from their other functions so that they could devote themselves to “ exclusively to their governmental responsibilities “.

The Senegalese Prime Minister had set an ultimatum to the members of the government from the evening of their appointment on April 5.
