Giro. Tour of Italy – Laurence Pithie: “I think I have lessons to learn…”

THE Tour of Italy really started this Monday for the team Groupama-FDJ. Coming to the Giro with a team exclusively focused on Laurence Pithie and therefore stages for sprinters, the French team had a first good opportunity to seize on this 3rd stage with a slightly hilly profile in the finale. Although well placed in the last kilometers, the young New Zealander ultimately failed to make any impact in the sprint, finishing in an anecdotal 17th place, far from the winner (Soudal Quick-Step). Not in a big day, the 21-year-old Kiwi intends to use this failure for the future, as he explained in his team’s press release.

“I think I have some lessons to learn from today, and I hope to have a better feeling”

“The team did a great job putting me back and keeping me in position. I lost a few places on the climb but managed to catch up with Lewis (Askey) who did an excellent job of positioning me in a good wheel with a kilometer to go. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the legs to conclude. It wasn’t a good day for me, but the team did a great job. I think I have some lessons to learn from today, and I hope to have better feelings in the days to come, concluded Laurence. Tomorrow is another day ! “, concluded with optimism the one who is discovering his first Grand Tour and who will have a great opportunity to make up for it on Tuesday, with a new finale cut out for him on the 4th stage.

Same story from his sports director Frédéric Guesdon, who preferred to retain the positive and plan with ambition for the future. “We got a good job from all the guys. If we continue like this, there is no reason why we should not seek a result. It was only the first sprint and it’s a new experience for Laurence. It would have been great if we had succeeded in everything from the first stage. It remains encouraging, everyone has worked hard and everyone is in good shape. See you tomorrow ! “.
