Jacques Audiard’s film will be submitted to the Academy of Oscars for its best foreign film category in 2025. It succeeds The passion of Dodin Bouffanta controversial choice from last year.

It is at Emilia Perez that the mission of making shine at the 2025 Oscars falls to us. It is this film by Jacques Audiard that the National Center of Cinema (CNC) decided this Wednesday, September 18 to propose to the Academy of the American ceremony, in the hope that it will be selected in the best foreign film category.

The committee responsible for making this decision had unveiled a pre-selection last week. Emilia Perez won against Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte, Mercy by Alain Guiraudie and All We Imagine as Light by Payal Kapadia.

Anatomy of a controversy

The selection of the film sent to the 2024 Oscars had been the subject of intense controversy. The commission had chosen The passion of Dodin Bouffant of Tran Anh Hung to the detriment ofAnatomy of a fall by Justine Triet, which was an international hit at the time, and which many observers considered more legitimate.

In fact, The Passion of Dodin Bouffant had not even been selected in the category of best foreign film by the Academy of Oscars. Anatomy of a fallon the other hand, had been nominated in five categories (including best film) but had to settle for the statuette for best original screenplay. This year, the commission responsible for choosing the film has been completely renewed.

Emilia Perezreleased on August 21 in French theaters, won the Jury Prize and the Best Actress Award at the last Film Festival, awarded collectively to the four main actresses (Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz).
