Paris: Two police officers convicted and banned from working for two years for violence in custody

Kicks, punches and knees recorded by the building’s CCTV. Two police officers were sentenced to 30 and 24 months in prison, suspended, and banned from practicing their profession for four and two years for hitting a man who was in custody at a police station in October 2023.

The two police officers, Yassine I. and Jorick P. were tried on Tuesday, September 17, before the 10th correctional chamber of the Paris judicial court for acts of “violence committed by a person in a position of public authority”, followed by incapacity for more than eight days, and for “forgery of an administrative document by a person in a position of public authority”.

Broken ribs

But in view of the seriousness of the facts, the Paris court also imposed an additional sentence of a ban on practicing the profession of police officer, two years for Yassine I. and four years for Jorick P. The victim had been taken into custody on October 8, 2023 at the police station in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, for driving under the influence of alcohol, contempt, violence and driving despite a suspended license.

Video surveillance had made it possible to determine that the scene had taken place around 7 a.m. in the waiting room for those arrested at the police station. The man in custody could be seen handcuffed to a bench by the wrist, kicking the wall, insulting the police and spitting, before the two men intervened.

Yassine I. then grabbed the victim by the arm and neck, pushed her against the wall before kneeing her. Jorick P. then punched her five times in the stomach and kneed her again before hitting her in the face with the back of his hand, which was wearing a hard-shell glove. The victim was given 10 days of temporary incapacity for work (ITT) for three broken ribs.

At the hearing on June 18, the prosecution requested a two-year suspended prison sentence and a one-year professional ban for Yassine I. Against Jorick P., the prosecution requested a three-year suspended prison sentence and a permanent ban from practicing the profession of police officer.
