Switzerland is a nation of expats. The latest figures from the Federal Statistical Office show that the Swiss community abroad increased by 1.7% in 2023 compared to the previous year. Nearly two thirds lived in Europe.
And more than a quarter resided in France, the Federal Statistical Office (OFS) said on Thursday. As of December 31, 2023, 813,400 Swiss were registered with a representation abroad. In 2022, the population of Swiss abroad had already increased by 1.5%.
It is in Asia that the expatriate community has grown the most (3.1%), followed by Europe (1.9%), Oceania (1.2%), North America (1 %) and Latin America with the Caribbean (0.4%). Only Africa saw a drop of 0.2%.
The OFS only partially attributes this development to migratory movements. The difference between births and deaths as well as naturalizations contributed to this. Three-quarters of Swiss abroad have several nationalities.
