Fatigue is a common and often disabling symptom in people with inflammatory bowel disease. However, a Danish study, the results of which are published in the journal Gastro Hep Advancesdemonstrate how vitamin B1 can play a fundamental role for these patients. Chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), are characterized by inflammation of the wall of a part of the digestive tract, due to a deregulation of the immune system.

A key bacterium

Vitamin B1, also known as thiamine, may provide a beneficial response to people suffering from chronic fatigue related to intestinal diseases. The study shows that patients’ response to vitamin B1 depends on the gut bacteria. Therefore, the researchers focused on a specific “good bacteria” that appears to play a crucial role. “We know that about half of fatigued patients benefit from a treatment to vitamin B1, but we have not yet found a difference between those who had an effect and those who did not. We now know that it is mainly the bacterium Faecalibacterium prausnitzii (FP) that is the key”explains Professor and consultant Christian Lodberg Hvas, lead author of the study.
