Whale conservationist Paul Watson was arrested on July 21. The 73-year-old has been in custody in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, ever since. But why was the Sea Shepherd founder arrested? What is he accused of? What are the latest developments? 20 Minutes takes stock for you.

Why was Paul Watson arrested?

The whale defender was arrested on July 21 in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. The founder of the environmental NGO Sea Shepherd has since been detained in the autonomous territory of Denmark. The American-Canadian activist was arrested under an extradition request from Japan, which has revived its request issued in 2012 via an Interpol red notice. Japan wants to try him for an incident with a whaling ship dating back to 2010.

It will be up to the Danish Justice Ministry to decide whether or not to extradite Paul Watson. It had indicated on Tuesday that the examination of the official extradition request was “ongoing”, without giving a timetable for its decision.
