CINEMA – Get your picks ready. The best-selling video game of all time, Minecraft could not escape a film adaptation. And while a film project has been in the works for many years, the very first cubic images of Minecraft: The Movie were unveiled this Wednesday, September 4.

Minecraft, a refuge for censored journalists thanks to Reporters Without Borders

A first trailer that gives pride of place to the monsters and the environment of this video game imagined by Markus Persson, as you can see in the video below. Because if it is obviously Jason Momoa (Aquaman, Game of Thrones) and actor and musician Jack Black (Tenacious D, King Kong) who play the main roles in this youth adventure film, this trailer for Minecraft is a bottomless pit of more or less subtle references to the universe of this game ” sandbox ” where imagination is often the player’s only barrier.

« You can create everything here “, we can hear, before Jack Black arrives on the screen in the role of Steve, the main character of the video game – with questionable charisma – embodied by more than 300 million players across the world.

As for Jason Momoa, it’s rather his on-screen look that seems questionable. Sporting a strange hairstyle and a candy pink perfecto, he seems to be part of a team made up of two teenagers and actress Danielle Brooks, the revelation of the series. Orange is the new black.

No storyline (yet), but fan service

As for winks to fans, it’s difficult to count them all given the bestiary of Minecraft seems to have been religiously studied by director Jared Hess and the film crew. Pink sheep, Piglins (humanoid pigs), Ghast, wolf, llama… Not to mention a fleeting appearance of the iconic Creeper, mascot of the video game since its creation at the dawn of the 2010s.

When it comes to building, one of the essential elements of gameplay in Minecraftit seems to have been faithfully adapted to the screen, through a short passage where we see a tree missing a cube, this one floating in a miniature version exactly as in the game. A scene with Jason Momoa, a pickaxe and a crafting table, should also speak to players.

In terms of images, the visual identity clearly leaves something to be desired, as it seems difficult to faithfully adapt the cubic graphics of this universe into a film in “ live action ” And as for the storyline, it’s difficult to take a clear position at this time, as the trailer doesn’t really seem to be interested in it.
