Closed in May… 2013 after having known several names (Gaumont among others), the former Pathé Lumière cinema in downtown Caen (Calvados) will soon be nothing more than a pile of rubble.
After the cleaning, asbestos removal and destruction operations at the rear of the building started in September 2024, the demolition of the facade began on Friday January 17, 2025.
From rue Saint-Jean to the cinema, half of boulevard Leclerc is closed by fences where construction equipment is busy behind.
-Archaeological excavations to follow
It will take several weeks to overcome this wasteland, considered a blemish in the Caen city center. After the demolition, it will be the archaeologists’ turn to dig into the ground.
A residential and commercial building instead
Then, construction of a new building will begin. A development with shops on the ground floor and luxury apartments above. Delivery is expected at the beginning of 2027.
