“We are at the start of a pharmacological revolution in the treatment of obesity”, interview with Professor Emmanuel Disse, endocrinologist at Sud hospital

What’s Up Doc: How exactly does the Wegovy work?

Pr Emmanuel Disse : Wegovy contains semaglutide, an analogue of GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), a hormone naturally produced by the intestine after a meal. This hormone acts on brain receptors to increase feelings of fullness and reduce appetite. By slowing gastric emptying, it also prolongs the feeling of fullness after meals.

This molecule also has hypoglycemic effects and has been used for several years as an antidiabetic (Ozempic) at a lower dosage than for weight control (1mg vs 2.4mg per week).

This drug represents an important advance for patients with obesity, but requires rigorous medical monitoring.
