The Count of Monte Cristo, A Little Something Extra, or En fanfare. 2024 is a prosperous year for French cinema in Caen (Calvados).
French films released in 2024 have indeed experienced great successas much in mainstream cinemas as the Pathé les Rives de l’Orne in Caen and theUGC of Mondevillethat in the two independent cinemas in the surrounding area which are the Lux and the Café des Images of Hérouville Saint-Clair.
French films were a hit at Caen in 2024
For José Luis Vinhas, the director of the Pathé des Rives de l’Orne cinema in Caen, this success of tricolor productions in Normandy corresponds to the national trend. The two films which attracted the most attention in its cinemas are French (find the ranking below). It’s actually a delightful surprise according to him:
If we could predict the success of The Count of Monte Cristo, no one expected such success for A little thing in addition.
Nearly one in two films was French
French films represent 44.4% of the national box office in 2024 according to the CNC, a score without equivalent for 15 years. Sandrine Marie, director of UGC Mondeville cinema is also categorical: “the films which attracted the most attention from us this year are the French comedies“, and in particular the comedy of Artus. The film made more than 53,000 entries, which delights the director: “this is the 7th highest number of admissions to a French cinema! »
According to her, this very good performance of French films released in 2024, such as Un p’tit truc en plus, L’Amour ouf or Le Comte de Monte Cristo, was favored by the lack of American blockbusters showing this year, caused by the several-month strike by screenwriters in many American production studios.
Success also in arthouse cinemas
French films were also successful in independent cinemas in Caennotably the Lux. Its director Gautier Labrusse did not expect them to be so successful with an audience more accustomed to arthouse films, that is to say, independently produced films. He explains that he offered screenings of The Count of Monte Cristo more than a month after its initial release at the end of June 2024, which did not prevent the public from responding. He also said he was pleasantly surprised by the success of the film. Twenty Gods, by French director Louise Corvoisier, released at the very end of 2024 and which climbs to 7th place in this cinema’s annual ranking.
