“In Douarnenez, there are two cinemas but there is room for both,” says Morgan Harari, new director of La Balise, an independent cinema included in the La Rules of the Game theater network. At 39 rue Pasteur , it has been a cinema for over thirty years: Le Rex, Le K and finally La Balise. In its two rooms, one with nearly 200 seats and the other with just under 100, the majority of films for the general public are programmed. “We can screen art house films but we are always careful not to create a duplicate with Le Club because that is of no interest,” explains Morgan Harari, who organizes previews and special screenings like of that of “Song of the sardinières” by Nina Montagné. A very big success. “It’s an economy that remains fragile but we have a real interest in being present here. In Douarnenez, people continue to go to see films in theaters. There is real room for improvement,” she says. In 2024, La Balise welcomed 30,500 spectators.

“We don’t live in a very rich city”

Claudette Leflamand is the director of the Toile d’ssais association which was created in 2004 for the reopening of the Le Club cinema, rue Berthelot. In its single room, arthouse, there are 256 seats. “Yes, there are movie buffs in Douarnenez but, despite all our efforts, we are in a very precarious economy,” analyzes the woman who admits to being worried due to the annual deficit. “I think that the health crisis has created other habits among certain spectators but the problem of purchasing power is not trivial. We don’t live in a very wealthy city,” she says. In 2024, Le Club welcomed 36,569 spectators.
