At the very end of 2024, Herman Hulst, the co-president of PlayStation, was received and interviewed by Famitsu magazine to talk about the 30th anniversary of the Japanese brand. During this exchange, several interesting points were raised, such as the return of major cult licenses. At that time, Hulst only stated that he was absolutely not against the return of cult games, without saying more. According to some sources, Sony is already at the development stage.
Old (modest) licenses soon to return?
It was during the latest VGC podcast that journalist Andy Robinson confirmed that he had indeed heard that Sony was considering bringing back old licenses on the front of the stage. However, according to the journalist, the Japanese firm would initially opt for secondary projectsmuch less ambitious than the return of the famous AAA. Thus, we should not count on a return of Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper or evenApe Escape. Or at least, not right away.
In the podcast, Robinson discusses the example of licensing Fat Princesswithout specifying that it would necessarily be this license which would be the first to return.
Lately, the return of great video game sagas through new opuses or remasters/remakes has been popular. During the Game Awards, several games were announced as Eyes 2the return ofOnimushaof prick or even Virtua Fighter. At the end of summer, it’s Crocthe little crocodile who announced his return with his original studio which had just been reborn from its ashes.
Bringing back major licenses allows you to play with fans’ nostalgia, and Capcom is very strong in this little game. On the other hand, there is a cult license which has been in enormous demand for years and which does not seem decided to show up… It is Dino Crisis. Recently, Capcom didn’t seem to be keen on this idea, while Sony offered an HD port via emulation on the PS Plus.
