According to him, Brenton Wood died of natural causes, surrounded by his family at his home in Moreno Valley, California. His last words to his fans, Manny Gallegos still assures, were “Catch you on the rebound”, in reference to one of his songs in 1967.
Born under the name Jesse Smith in Louisiana, Brenton Wood began writing songs in the 1960s. It was in 1967 that he found success with The Oogum Boogum Songranked 19th on the Billboard R&B and 34th on the Billboard Hot 100. But it is with the following title, Gimme Little Signa few months later, that he signed his biggest hit. The title sold a million copies and ranked 9th in the charts.
Renewed popularity
These two hits are also the titles of his first two albums, released in 1967. He will publish a third, the same year, Baby you got itand nine during his career. The last one, Lord hear my prayerwas released in 2009.
In 1972, Brenton Wood started his own label, Prophesy Records and continued to write songs.
