At the beginning

It is from the offices of Disruptif, the marketing agency that he set up in Toulouse with Gaëtan, his partner, that Damien Joly recounts his beginnings as an online content creator: “I developed the Mister project Galette in 2018 and thus began to converge towards the culture of vinyl record. I have been a collector for around fifteen years. I have always been immersed in this world, even if my father was more oriented towards CDs. He listened a lot Dire Straits, Led Zeppelingroups of this type. My mother listened France Gall and the French variety. »

“Mister Galette got by for a year before stopping,” continues Damien Joly. My partner, who already produced a lot of online content, encouraged me to show something else. That’s when I decided to take to the streets to talk about music with people. »

“I am very driven by human contact”

It is “armed” with a vinyl record, most often a great classic, that Damien Joly questions passers-by in the streets of Toulouse. Owner of a collection of more than 500 vinyls, Damien is what we call a true enthusiast: “vinyl is a beautiful object. You can open it, find text there, look at photos. The oldest ones are like old books. They have their own smell. And then I like the ritual inherent to vinyl. We take it out of its case, remove any dust before putting it on the turntable… For me, music is love. »

A love that Damien maintains and shares every day. “Vinyl has a transmission value for me,” he emphasizes. I don’t see myself leaving a music streaming account to my children in the future. Vinyl encourages more immersion. It keeps memories alive. As the Toulouse electro artist Idem Nevi told me one day, when he had just pressed his first records, ‘the vinyl gives the impression of touching the music’.

A big fan of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, whose albums he says he “bled” all of, Damien Joly highlights a welcome eclecticism, oscillating between pop, blues, rap and even French Touch artists like Daft. Punk, which he loves. Music whose message he peddles in the streets of Toulouse: “I wanted to bring this slightly fresh side, specific to the south of France. I’m from Toulouse, I grew up here. The idea was to show that in Toulouse, there are also people who are moving. We have a good scene, with a lot of movements and many artists. »

Former producer, author of two EP’s, Damien Joly today receives a lot of requests from groups and other artists wanting to see him give his opinion on their music. Damien who does not hesitate to sometimes be sharp, as in the video where he criticizes Indochina : “this video triggered a lot of reactions. I don’t like their music, but I respect everything they’ve accomplished. Regardless, my goal is to have fun by encouraging reactions. And besides, if one day what I do no longer amuse me, I won’t do it anymore. »
