The Italian Supercoppa site was exciting until the end. A Milan derby, played in Riyadh, between Inter, winner of Serie A last year, and AC Milan, leader last year. This season, AC Milan are not even in the top six of the Italian league, positions which would allow them to access the UEFA competitions next year.
But on Monday, they made an incredible comeback and lifted the trophy.
Inter seemed to have the game in hand with two goals from Lautaro Martínez and Mehdi Taremi just at the end of the first half and the start of the second. But the Rossoneri managed a comeback that few thought possible: goals from Theo Hernández, Christian Pulisic and finally Tammy Abraham in the 93rd minute, canceling out extra time. This is the second time Milan have won the derby this season, following the 1-2 victory in September (Inter’s only defeat so far in an otherwise excellent run in Serie A).
A week ago, Milan fired their manager, Paulo Fonseca, due to poor results at national level. Sérgio Conceição – Porto’s previous manager for seven years – had a dream debut: on Friday they beat Juventus 2-1, and today they won their eight Supercoppa, their first since 2016 after losing in 2018 and 2022.
