CABARET DE L’UNION: The time of the peasants
Although the proportion of operating farmers has fallen sharply over the past forty years, now representing only 1.5% of total employment, their work still remains at the heart of fundamental social, economic and cultural issues in the construction of our societies and our lifestyles.
Beyond its nourishing dimension, agricultural activity has shaped the landscape and reliefs of our countryside even if the work of farmers remains in a form of invisibility just like their dreams, their history and more generally what represents their Culture.
6 p.m. – FILM “The time of the peasants”
Golden Age, Iron Age – Episode 1/4 – .55′, 2023
Director: Stan Neumann
Since the fall of Rome, European peasants, at the bottom of the social scale, have almost always suffered from the powers that be. After “The Time of the Workers”, Stan Neumann retraces in four parts the long history of a despised and exploited category.
The history of the European peasantry begins in the ruins of Rome. With the disappearance of the empire and the big cities, the majority of the population found themselves peasants. Freed from taxes, these new farmers, more autonomous than they ever will be, produce only as much as their needs.
But from the 9th century, the warrior elites imposed the return of domination, taxes and corvées, while the Church hunted down the ancient rural cults. Here has come the time of feudalism and oppression.
