Marie-Claude Beaud died at the age of 78, as reported RTL Luxembourg on this Sunday, December 29. “She passed away peacefully within the family circle” our colleagues further indicate.
Marie-Claude Beaud is considered one of the great ladies of the last fifty years in the Art world.
Appointed Officer of the Order of Civil and Military Merit of Adolphe de Nassau by Grand Duke Jean in 2008, then to the rank of Commander of the Grand Ducal Order of the Oak Crown in 2012, she was a person crucial in the development of the Grand-Duc Jean Museum of Modern Art, better known by the abbreviation Mudam.
Eight years at Mudam
In January 2000, the Grand-Duc Jean Museum of Modern Art Foundation asked her to direct a museum whose doors would not finally open until 2006. She would remain in the position until 2008.
After studying art history, Marie-Claude Beaud was, from 1969 to 1978, curator, then director of the Grenoble Museum. Before taking charge of the Toulon Museum until 1984. She then directed the Cartier Foundation from 1984 to 1994, then the American Center until 1996. After the Mudam, Marie-Claude Beaud directed the New National Museum of Monaco from 2009 to 2021. She then ended her professional life.
In addition to the distinctions received in Luxembourg, she was also Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters and Knight of the Legion of Honor (in France) but also Commander of the Order of Cultural Merit of Monaco.
