Funny evening at Lotto Park for two players: Yari Verschaeren and Zanka. They both had a knee-jerk reaction to their audience.
Few observers expected to see Yari Verschaeren started by David Hubert this Friday. We put him in our probable eleven, based on the principle that a match against Dender was an opportunity for Verschaeren to revive himself a little and end the year in style.
The start of the match was complicated for the “Kid”, with sluggish dribbling and ball losses which began to annoy Lotto Park. Even seconds before his superb goal, Verschaeren’s rough control had brought a slight rumble through the stadium… stopped short, of course, by his superb strike. Yari Verschaeren then celebrated provocatively, hands to ears, as if asking the Park to dare to whistle again.
In a completely different context, Zanka, booed insistently by the public, also reacted badly at the end of the match, making a gesture to the stands. “You can never win against the public,” regrets David Hubert. “But these are reactions that happen in the moment, it’s not calculated. These guys are winners and are therefore frustrated.”
The RSCA coach would therefore like to see a little more maturity from his players in the face of criticism, but remains disappointed by Lotto Park’s attitude towards them. “I expect our supporters to support the team from the first to the last minute. After the match, it’s something else, they of course have every right to show their disappointment,” emphasizes Hubert.
It was of course Zanka who was the main target of the public’s anger after his big restart error on Dender’s 2-2. “These things happen. The players do their best to help the team, and it doesn’t help them. It’s a shame,” concluded Hubert with disappointment.
