Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: one of the greatest films in the history of the seventh art, quite simply.

This evening, Arte is showing an absolute classic of the seventh art: A Clockwork Orange, directed by Stanley Kubrick. Released 53 years ago, the film’s power of fascination, immersed in an ultra-violent universe, remains intact.

A Clockwork Orange, a chilling scene of which was partly improvised, plunges the viewer into the 21st century, into a world where violence and sex reign. Alex, a young gang leader, sadistically exerts blind terror. After his imprisonment, psychoanalysts use him as a guinea pig in experiments designed to curb crime…

A big screen adaptation of Anthony Burgess’ 1962 novel, Clockwork Orange, which questions man’s relationship with violence, is a real shock. The feature film directed by Malcolm McDowell, a social satire punctuated by the brilliant soundtrack by Wendy Carlos, captivates from start to finish and leaves a lasting impression. Constantly surprising, this subversive and disturbing work should however be reserved for a very informed audience due to its anxiety-provoking atmosphere and particularly violent scenes…

A film preserved in Congress

Very controversial when it was released in theaters, with some criticizing the film for its “sexual violence” deemed too extreme and the relaxed way in which it was staged, Clockwork Orange was pulled from theaters in the United Kingdom after two years of operation. Also banned in Ireland, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Spain, the film was selected in 2020 by the National Film Registry for preservation at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., for its “cultural, historical or aesthetic significance.”

A huge public success with over 7.6 million spectators in French cinemas, the masterpiece Clockwork Orange is coming to your living room this evening. Ready for a gigantic slap?

Film prohibited for under 16s

Tonight on Arte at 10:50 p.m.
