Buckingham Palace unveils new portrait of the king in military dress

On the occasion of Armed Forces Day, Buckingham Palace has published a never-before-seen photograph of King Charles in military clothing.

Buckingham Palace unveiled a new portrait of King Charles III on its social media this Saturday, June 29, to celebrate Armed Forces Day, the day commemorating the British armed forces.

This portrait is by Hugo Burnand, who has already taken several official portraits of the royal family. He notably photographed the wedding of Charles and Camilla in 2005. He also took the first official portrait of King Charles last year.

This unpublished portrait shows the king dressed in a ceremonial frock coat with his military medals and his sword. This is the first official portrait of the monarch since the announcement of her cancer at the start of the year.

A painting by Jonathan Yeo representing the British sovereign was also unveiled in May. On this canvas with a red background, Charles wears the uniform of the Welsh Guards, of which he was appointed regimental colonel in 1975.

Resumption of activity

Nine months after his coronation in May 2023, the palace announced at the beginning of last February that Charles III suffered from cancerdiscovered after prostate surgery in January. Its nature and progress have never been specified.

Charles III resumed his public activities last April. He has since taken part in the commemorations of the Allied landings in Normandy and in the Trooping the Color parade, which celebrates his anniversary.

The year 2024 has been particularly difficult for the British royal family. Kate also suffers from cancer, detected after a major abdominal operation in January. And the king’s sister Princess Anne was hospitalized after suffering a concussion.
