A large fire broke out in Inuvik in the Northwest Territories on Friday, destroying two homes and killing a pet.

The fire broke out at the intersection of Reliance Street and Inuit Road late Friday afternoon.

Firefighters arrived on scene around 5:30 p.m., according to a social media update from the Inuvik Fire Department.

At that point, one home was already badly damaged, according to the update. The fire then spread to an adjacent home.

Both homes were destroyed, and some neighboring homes suffered damage from radiant heat.

Some occupants were in the homes at the time, but were able to escape. A family pet died in the fire.

We ask the community and others to respect the privacy of those affected, the statement said.

A total of 22 firefighters responded to the fire. Three of them were taken to hospital due to possible heat-related issues, but all have been released from the hospital and are doing well.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. The Inuvik Fire Department and the NWT Fire Commissioner’s Office are investigating.
