Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte: “Monte-Cristo, a modern anti-hero”

It is one of the most anticipated French films of the year and it will be released in theaters this Friday, June 28, a strategic choice two days before the opening of the cinema festival. It’s about Count of Monte-Cristo. After The three Musketeers, for which they wrote the screenplay, Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte benefited from a budget of 40 million euros to produce the adaptation of this other very popular novel by Alexandre Dumas.

The young sailor Edmond Dantès is about to become captain of a merchant ship and marry the woman he loves… But three jealous rivals will join forces to send him to prison. When he miraculously escapes fifteen years later, Edmond Dantès gets his hands on an immense hidden treasure and will use his colossal fortune to satisfy his revenge.

Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte have made choices in the 1,400 pages of the original novel, but they have kept its spirit: a clever mix of romantic story, adventure tale and reflection on human darkness.

Carried by Pierre Niney, impeccable in the title role, this Count of Monte Cristo, although taking place in the 19th century, turns out to be very modern.

Enough to seduce 21st century spectators who will enjoy this popular and quality French entertainment.
