Attention fans of anachronistic historical series, a new little gem has just arrived on Prime Video. If you liked Dickinson on Apple TV+, The Great on the late Starzplay or Bridgerton on Netflix, then this new costume drama is for you!

This new 8-episode fiction series is based on the series of novels reimagining the historical life of Lady Jane Gray by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand and Jodi Meadows. This literary series gives the unfortunate Lady Jane Gray a life of love and adventure while the real Lady Jane Gray had a sad fate.

She was in fact the great-granddaughter of Henry VII, King of England, chosen by Edward VI, then on the Throne, to succeed him in order to prevent his half-sister Mary the Catholic from taking power. But the latter does everything to oust her rival and succeeds in her enterprise by having her locked up and then beheaded.

Lady Jane Gray therefore very briefly fled Queen of England, which earned her the sordid nickname of “the Nine Day Queen”. Despite her unfortunate fate, Lady Jane Gray had a solid reputation and undeniable intellectual qualities. Historian Alison Weir describes her as “one of the most erudite female minds of the 16th century”.

And it is precisely from this angle that the series My Lady Jane will portray the heroine and offer her the adventures that she was not able to experience in her time, like Emily Dickinson in the Apple TV+ series. and Catherine The Great in the Hulu/Starz series.

An epic and irreverent nugget

The series created by Gemma Burgess and Meredith Glynn (Supernatural, The Boys) is the new period drama not to be missed for the burlesque but terribly inspiring intrigue of its heroine Lady Jane, played with mischief and passion by the talented Emily Bader.

No damsel in distress here looking for a prince charming, just an upper class woman with great intelligence, unfailing courage and crazy impertinence who tries as best she can to get emerge into a kingdom where no holds barred in politics… but also in magic!

This historical-romantic fiction also leans towards fantasy with some unexpected and hilarious fantastic plots, mixing the adventure side of a series like Game of Thrones and the absurdity of a series like Disenchantment.

Prime

My Lady Jane offers you a completely delirious alternative universe, a real mix of genres, a joyous irreverent bazaar which holds up and which entertains at every moment thanks to its colorful, almost parodic characters and its brilliantly written dialogues.

Lovers of soap twists, political-historical workings, fanciful adventures and deadpan humor will delight in My Lady Jane. But don’t think that romance is being put aside, there are obviously love stories to follow, including that of Lady Jane, who has nothing to envy of the sensual romances of Bridgerton.

Totally wacky and anachronistic, My Lady Jane also has the good taste of being punctuated by timeless pop-rock music which brings a particular flavor to this costume drama, like Sofia Coppola’s Marie-Antoinette. In short, this new series is an epic, quirky and enjoyable tale not to be missed.

The series “My Lady Jane” is available on Prime Video.
