Located in Espelette, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, the tomb was restored thanks to an online kitty.

A rejuvenated grave for the very first Miss France. Agnès Souret, elected “the most beautiful woman in France” in 1920, rests in Espelette (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) in a now renovated tomb. An inauguration took place on Friday June 14, in the presence of Mayor Jean-Marie Iputcha and a handful of guests.

“We will have to put it in the guides,” he declares in the columns of Sud Ouest, which reports the information. “I find it normal to highlight our heritage.”

Monument

This renovation is due to Jérôme Zapata, tour guide in Saint-Jean-de-Luz: “His tomb is one of only two in Aquitaine to have been classified as a Historic Monument,” he explains. “Everything accelerated when I started an online petition to renovate it.” 18,000 euros were raised. The pink marble has been treated, the stained glass windows cared for.

“(Agnès Souret) is a reference for us, the Misses,” Maude Ricard, Miss Basque Country 2024, who was present at the inauguration, explained to the regional daily. The Miss France committee was unable to attend.

Agnès Souret was born in 1902 in Bayonne and died in 1928, at the age of 26 in Argentina, from peritonitis. Following her election, she led a socialite life, between her activities as an actress and dancer.
