More than 10 MDH devoted to technical work

The Agency for the Promotion and Development of the North (APDN) is looking for a service provider to carry out the technical work concerning the restoration of the emblematic Tangier monument Plaza de Toros.

The completion of restoration work on the famous Plaza de Toros in Tangier is progressing quickly. Indeed, the Agency for the Promotion and Development of the North (APDN) has launched a call for tenders aimed at completing the rehabilitation and restoration work on the emblematic Tangier monument (Lot 3: techniques) for a budget estimated at more than 10 million dirhams. In detail, the work will cover electricity, access control system, elevators, plumbing, fire protection, air conditioning, ventilation and smoke extraction. It should be remembered that the historic Plaza de Toros was built in 1949 by Spaniards who lived in Tangier and who wanted to transmit an aspect of Spanish heritage and culture to Morocco. This monument, also called the arenas of Tangier, has long hosted bull races and bullfights. Closed since the 1980s, the Hispano-Moorish style architectural heritage building, classified as a historic monument in 2016, has suffered significant damage.

This rehabilitation project is part of a partnership agreement linking the Agency for the Promotion and Development of the North (APDN), the wilaya of the region, the Regional Council and the municipality of Tangier, with an estimate budget amounting to 50 million dirhams.
It was entrusted following the launch of a competition to the group of architects composed of Hicham Khattabi, Jaouad Khattabi, Younes Diouri. Their mission will be to restore the arenas to their original condition in order to preserve the historical and architectural aspect of the building. “With the growing interest of the Spanish community in bullfights, it was natural to offer the city of Tangier arenas dedicated to bullfighting events,” reads a presentation note for the project from the group of architects. .

It should be noted that it is planned that the arena site, whose performance space will have a capacity of 7,000 seats, will be surrounded by a public space with parking, street furniture, a fountain and a fountain. agora. The project also consists of an outdoor exhibition space, stands and an esplanade of more than 1 hectare. “This offers pleasant walks while offering the neighborhood, which has experienced significant densification, an entertainment space par excellence. These exterior arrangements follow the circular rhythm of the arenas, and are formed in distracting curvilinear lines. A pleasant aesthetic, a functional design and fluid circuits, result from in-depth reflection and the hard collective work of the three architects,” indicates the same source.
