LComic strip author Luc Maezelle, better known under the pseudonym Mazel, died at the age of 92, Dupuis editions said on Saturday. The author was born in Herentals (province of Antwerp) on June 27, 1931 and lost his life during the night from Wednesday to Thursday.
Luc Maezelle had studied architecture at the Saint-Luc Institute. Once he graduated, he built houses and designed sets for several plays in his free time. He heads towards the world of comics after meeting a young girl at the theater, the niece of the Belgian cartoonist Sirius, who encourages him to come to Dupuis.
Mazel notably illustrated “A Beautiful Story of Uncle Paul” in Spirou in the 1950s, or even The Tarantula Affair or Bôjolet and Riesling in Tintin. At the end of the 1960s, he worked with the Belgian comic book scriptwriter Cauvin. The duo will publish in Spirou the series Câline et Calebasse or Boulouloum et Guiliguili, which will then become Kaloum et Kong.
He would then be at the origin of Jessie Jane in 1981, “Mousquetaires”, the new title of Câline et Calabass, or the series “Les Paparazzi” in the 90s.
