Quebec National Day 2024: festive shows despite two major absentees

As is now a distant tradition, Quebecers will have their hearts celebrating on June 23 and 24, on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec and at Maisonneuve Park in Montreal, but there will be two major absentees from these festivities. national holiday 2024: Karl Tremblay and Jean-Pierre Ferland.

The unjust death of the singer of the Cowboys Fringants and the still recent death of the Little King have had a profound impact on the people of Quebec over the past year.

In November, Quebecers experienced a collective mourning of an emotional intensity rarely seen when Karl Tremblay breathed his last, after a tough battle with cancer, at the age of 47.

As for Jean-Pierre Ferland, his mark on the cultural life of Quebec has been such that tributes have continued to be paid to him since his great departure in April.

“Sometimes, it seems like it takes death for us to find ourselves again and realize how much we trip over ourselves when we experience beautiful communions. I may be telling myself stories, but I think that Karl and Jean-Pierre would be happy to see that their deaths will have allowed us to experience great business,” believes the host of the National Day show in Montreal, Pierre- Yves Lord.

“Solid party”

If he were still with us, Jean-Pierre Ferland would have experienced a special national holiday since it was planned that we would take advantage of the show in Montreal to mark his 90the birthday, June 24.

Instead, Claude Dubois, Roxane Bruneau, FouKi, Judi Richards, Daniel Lavoie and several other artists will revive his songs in a number created for the show, which we called A chance we have.

Even if the injury linked to the departure of Jean-Pierre Ferland is recent, Pierre-Yves Lord is expecting a festive evening.

“I don’t think it’s going to be a sad evening. We can celebrate by offering touching and respectful moments. I still invite you to a solid party.”

The resilience of Marie-Annick

In Quebec, on June 23, there will certainly be a lot of emotion since alongside Mara Tremblay, Patrice Michaud, Mitsou and Paul Daraîche, the stars of the great show on the Plains of Abraham, we will be able to see Marie-Annick Lépine , the widow of Karl Tremblay, who will be there to sing a Cowboys Fringants song.

“I find her really resilient, courageous. She is going to be surrounded by so much love,” says the artistic director of the show, Karine Arsenault.

One of the last concerts of the Cowboys Fringants with their singer took place on the Plains, during the 2023 Summer Festival. In front of 90,000 people moved to tears, the group offered a show already inscribed in golden letters in the history of Quebec.

Less than a year later, here is Marie-Annick Lépine again in the same place.

“She’s the one who’s going to prepare the note for her boyfriend, she’s going to sing his song. It’s going to be extremely touching,” predicts her friend and hostess of the evening, Mara Tremblay.
