“Subscription fatigue” is real: 2 out of 3 French people believe that there are too many subscription services, according to a new European survey. The French are among those who spend the most on their various subscriptions.

The French have on average 3 subscriptions to services of all kinds, in addition to “traditional” subscriptions (telephony, internet). Even if France is last on the list in terms of the number of subscriptions – it’s 3.3 in the United Kingdom – the French are among those who pay the most: €780 per year (€65 per month), behind the British (€814), but ahead of all other continental European countries, according to this survey carried out by 3Gem on behalf of Bango. In the United States, the average is €863.

Dear subscriptions

In detail, subscription video on demand services are the most popular among French subscribers (67%), followed by retail (Amazon Prime) with 36%, then music at 31%. The hunt for password sharing by Netflix and other services is paying off: 33% of subscribers are paying for a service they previously had free access to.

At the same time, 22% have consumed pirated content due to the lack of “all-in-one” options. This is more than anywhere else (the European average is 19%). Despite the introduction of a “streaming tax” which forced Spotify to increase its prices, 72% of French people accepted the principle: only 6% decided to cancel a subscription.

More generally, 6 out of 10 French people say they cannot afford all the subscriptions they want. 57% of them would like to be able to manage all their subscriptions in a single application, and 45% would like their telephone operator to offer this solution.

Just over 4 in 10 Europeans have canceled a subscription due to price increases. Just under a third switched to a plan with advertising, compared to 26% who instead decided to upgrade their subscription (28% canceled everything).

21% of European subscribers have subscribed to services offered in bundles or via options with their operator. The movement has accelerated in the United States, with offers combined with several streaming services which are cheaper than subscribing to each of them independently (35% in France do this). Carriers like Verizon also support payment for services like Game Pass, Snapchat+, Max, etc.
