No red carpets, nor rhinestones, nor sequins, for that matter, to welcome George Clooney, last Thursday, November 7, during the inauguration of the Liberté cinema in Brignoles in the Var.

It was from his small car that the American star got out to join Didier Brémond, the mayor of Brignoles, at the bottom of the steps in front of the brand new multiplex.

And it is with all simplicity that George Clooney approaches the chosen one while apologizing: “I’m sorry my French is horrible! I’m learning, but I don’t have a good level” and to continue, with a smile on his lips: “I haven’t seen it yet (Editor’s note: the cinema), I’m going to go and visit it. Didier did a great job. He built it himself, did you know that?”

Continuing, still in a tone of humor and jokes, he cannot help but tease his neighbor Brad Pitt who did not come. “Where is Brad? Everyone wants Brad. You know, he’s very old”

Then, it is with the elegance, which characterizes him in his films, that he dismisses questions relating to the election of Donald Trump. “Now is not the right time or place to talk about this.”

An evening dedicated to friendship and relaxation, as the city’s chief magistrate said: “He’s the one who called me to tell me he wanted to be there with me at this inauguration. I promise.”

A world star for the inauguration of a cinema hall in a municipality of 17 664 inhabitants, in 2021, according to INSEE. A nice last minute surprise for Pierre Leroy, the director of the Liberté cinema: “It was really at the last minute that we learned of his arrival. Last week, we were still in the works, we were finalizing the construction of this multiplex. But when he returns, the red carpet will obviously be on appointment.”

After taking part in the game of photos and speeches, the muse of the famous brand of coffee has made a major proposal: “Could we schedule a screening once a year to raise money for a charity?”

At the end of the ceremony, the actor didn’t even run away. He takes the time to take selfies with a few slightly exhilarated admirers.

Having finished his social affairs, he left as he arrived, behind the wheel of his little car, as simply as possible. End of the evening for a Brignolais like no other all the same.
