” THE wind of history blows in this new cultural season many big celebrations », announces the team of Franciscans from Deauville (Calvados) which revealed its rich cultural program for the summer season composed of more than 60 meetings “between exhibitions, conferences, shows, interviews and invited festivals”.

Loving “mixing the uses of culture”, this Franciscan place offers “extremely diverse” meetings to reach everyone, whatever the artistic sensitivity or waiting,” underlines Philippe Augier, mayor of Deauville.

A diversity that echoes the “ major themes of the territory “, to exhibitions that welcomes this place of cultural life, but also to the very many celebrations celebrated during this period: the 80th anniversary of the Landing, the centenary of Les Planches, the 150 years of the birth of Impressionism or the 50th edition of the Deauville American film festival.

Overview of the main events of the summer.

A dialogue between Japanese art and impressionism

“It is an exceptional exhibition which is part of the Normandy impressionist festival which celebrates 150 years of the birth of this artistic movement,” insists Cyril Le Boulaire, cultural director of the Franciscaines.

Titled “Floating worlds, from Japonism to contemporary art”, this exhibition is co-designed with the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo. “The point is to compare Japan and France, the way in which the first impressionists were inspired by Japan. In the same way, this exhibition shows how “Japanese artists today continue to draw inspiration from the first impressionists”.

Around this exhibition, a large appointment panel has been set up. Among them, two highlights. First the July 27 with Koki Nakanopianist “who was the disciple of Ryūichi Sakamoto, great film music composer”, and who will present his latest album accompanied by dancer Tess Voelker.

“Another artistic figure from Japan”, the dancer Kenta Kojiri will perform at the Franciscans on August 3. “It’s very rare to see him in France, he will offer a choreographic performance in dialogue with the koto, a traditional Japanese harp.”

An immersive and urban experience with Babel

Echoing the exhibitions installed in the Universes dedicated to architecture, Les Franciscaines invites the architect and visual artist Steve Salembier for an installation and an immersive performance, Babel. “He installs his models on stage, he walks through the heart of these models with a lamp and the performance is projected on a screen, which allows us to travel with him,” explains Cyril Le Boulaire. Babel is a way of questioning our contemporary solitudes in big cities. It’s a very poetic and very visual performance on man’s relationship to urban space.”

The Franciscan team adds: “His dissection of the contemporary cosmopolitan city is both ruthless and poetic. It looks at our galloping urban planning and raises the question of the place of life in such an environment.”
