The fact of the day
Vladimir Putin on Thursday displayed his unwavering determination to conquer all of Donbass, the large industrial zone in eastern Ukraine, where his army continues to advance despite the Ukrainian offensive in the Russian region of Kursk. “The total liberation” of Donbass, which includes the regions of Lugansk and Donetsk, “is our number one priority,” the Russian head of state hammered home on Thursday during an economic forum in the far east of Russia.
The Russian president also said he was willing to hold talks with kyiv on the basis of those of spring 2022, if Ukraine so requests, but on condition that they be conducted on the basis of the “documents on which we had agreed and which had been de facto initialed in Istanbul” in spring 2022. The texts he mentioned have never been made public, and the Ukrainian side has always denied any official agreement. Moscow has said in recent weeks that it was ruling out any discussions because of the Ukrainian attack launched in early August in the Russian region of Kursk.
