DISCONTENT – Martinique is shaken by urban violence following protests against the high cost of living. Six police officers were slightly injured on the night of Monday to Tuesday

On the night of Monday to Tuesday, six police officers were slightly injured during urban violence in Fort-de-France, Martinique, according to a press release from the prefecture. The island is currently experiencing a major wave of protests against the high cost of living. The clashes took place in the Sainte-Thérèse district, near the Grand Port Maritime.

The police intervened three times to confront groups of violent individuals, who targeted them using firearms and throwing projectiles. The prefecture also specifies that the police were targeted twice by “live ammunition”, slightly injuring six officers and damaging two vehicles. Three people were arrested after this attack.

The prefecture indicated that “three cars and several garbage cans were set on fire […]as well as materials stolen from a public works site.” Three cans of gasoline were discovered near the barricades, which led to a ban on the sale of fuel in cans to prevent any risk.
