Monkey pox: a first case of the new variant identified in France: News

The Ministry of Health announced on Monday January 6 that a first case of the new variant of Mpox, monkeypox, was detected in , reports Ouest-.

This is a first in France which does not fail to worry the health authorities. As revealed West FranceMonday January 6, a woman was contaminated by the new Mpox variant. The Ministry of Health then confirmed the information in the evening. Residing in Brittany, the patient was detected positive for this new strain called “Clade 1b” at University Hospital and is being treated by the infectious diseases department.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health said that “the reported case concerns a person who has not traveled to Central Africa, an area in which the different clades of Mpox virus have been actively circulating for several months“, but she “was, however, in contact with two people returning from central Africa“. Since the summer of 2024, France has been the fifth European country to detect this variant on its soil after Sweden, Germany, the United Kingdom and Belgium.

A new variant that is more easily transmitted

As a reminder, monkeypox is a viral disease which spreads from animals to humans but which is also transmitted between humans, causing fever, muscle pain and skin lesions. The new “Clade 1b” variant appears to be transmitted more easily than its “cousin“from clade IIb, which had already circulated in France and in many Western countries in 2022 and 2023.”Health authorities recall the importance of vaccination for target audiences“insisted the Ministry of Health in its press release.
