According to a new epidemiological bulletin from Public Health France, 118 cases of indigenous chikungunya have been recorded in Reunion since August 2024.
Information from Public Health France:
Since 08/23, 118 cases of indigenous chikungunya have been reported in Reunion. All cases, except one probable case, are confirmed cases, PCR +. For S51, 17 cases were reported and for S52, the provisional total is 25 cases. These cases are distributed between 5 active outbreaks. These centers are those of Ermitage, Grand Bassin, Ligne des 400, Trois Mares and Etang salé les Hauts. The Etang Salé outbreak continues to be very active (9 cases in S51 and already 14 cases in S52 – unconsolidated).
The ARS vector control service has deployed its management measures around all cases. However, we observe that the circulation of chikungunya is intensifying in the territory and continues to disperse. This dispersion is manifested by a greater difficulty in linking cases to a known outbreak (increase in “isolated cases”), indicating a spreading circulation. To date, the health impact remains relatively low, with no hospitalizations having been reported.
Concerning dengue fever, since the end of August, 34 cases have been reported. The cases were located in 10 municipalities: St Joseph, St Pierre, St Paul, le Tampon, St Denis, Le Port, St Benoit, St Louis, St Leu and trois Bassins. In W50 and W51, 2 cases were reported. At the start of the southern summer, the health impact of dengue fever is negligible (no hospitalizations > 24 hours since the start of August and 17 visits to the emergency room).
