60% of French people over 50 have still not taken into account the benefits of screening!

At the end of August, in Bléneau, there were around twenty people who took part in the information game, collecting in the process the precious kits necessary for colorectal cancer screening. This time, the Burgundy Franche-Comté Cancer Coordination and Screening Center and the Yonne Primary Health Insurance Fund offered their services in one of the rooms in Champignelles. A friendly welcome with seasoned professionals to demystify and reassure about this preventive medical procedure, which can save lives…

CHAMPIGNELLES : We can never say it enough, but colorectal cancer is a serious pathology that should not be minimized out of hand or through simple ignorance since it causes nearly 17,000 deaths annually in . Which makes it the second deadliest cancer after lung cancer.

In Yonne, the joint actions carried out by the Cancer Coordination and Screening Center of Burgundy Franche-Comté and the Primary Health Insurance Fund (CPAM) of Yonne are bearing fruit in terms of awareness and information. Organized screening is also offered to 115,000 Icaunais, aged 50 to 74.

A screening which is carried out every two years by looking for blood in the stools, generally preceded by a letter received in the mailbox to inform the patient.

It was therefore equipped with these precious screening kits that the organizers of this second session, hosted in Puisaye-Forterre, received for a whole morning those who dared to climb the few steps leading inside this small room, transformed into a time is not customary in place of medical discussions.

The virtuous principle of “going towards”

A real action of “reaching out” to the population for the CPAM which has proven convincing in more than one way for those looking for information. Other operations should be implemented in 2025 to address mobility constraints.

Not everyone necessarily left the room with their kit. Some people didn’t necessarily fit into the boxes! Others left with the valuable therapeutic information distilled by Doctor Stéphane CORNELIS, coordinating doctor and head of the Yonne site for the Burgundy Franche-Comté Cancer Coordination and Screening Center. The latter mentioned the factual approach to this screening organized around colorectal cancer. While wondering about the low participation rate in France among our compatriots, even though the operation is free. The screening kits are handed out by attending physicians and pharmacists.

“The participation rate is surprisingly very low in France, notes the practitionerit amounts to 34% while that of the Spanish Basque country is 68% and in the Netherlands it is 71%. ».

96% negative feedback after testing

It’s not for lack of information, obviously. But indeed, out of a concern for prevention which is clearly lacking in France.

« It is a screening for polyps which are benign lesions on the intestine, adds Doctor CORNELISthe interest of screening is to be able to flush out polyps before they degenerate into cancer… ».

This reduces the incidence of the disease and detects it as quickly as possible. “ We want to prevent people from getting sick ».

The objective shared by the various organizers of this event, the Local Health Contract, the Cancer Coordination and Screening Center of Burgundy Franche-Comté, the CPTS of Puisaye-Forterre, the MSA and the CPAM which manages the shipment invitations to people aged 50 to 74.

Only around thirty people attended this very important invitation. A “going towards” which is not intended to scare, either! The tests come back negative in 96% of cases. To meditate when we know what these pathologies represent to the community in terms of treatment, without forgetting the suffering endured…
