According to a new study published in the journal BMC Public Health, sufficient choline intake could reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and strokes. Scientists reached this conclusion by analyzing data from 5,525 American adults between 2011 and 2018.

As the Vidal website – reference for health products – explains – choline is essential: “It represents an essential element of the cell membrane and is used in the synthesis of many chemical messengers in the body.“.

As ANSES specifies, choline is involved “in metabolism, transport of lipids and cholesterol and synthesis of neurotransmitters. It is a constituent of certain phospholipids playing an important role in the structure and function of cell membranes“.

Choline is synthesized or extracted from foods that are rich in it such as liver, egg yolk, soy or cauliflower. “The official US recommendations for choline intake are 425 mg per day for adult women and 550 mg per day for adult men.“, specifies Vidal. And to complete: “During pregnancy, a choline deficiency in the mother causes abnormalities in the child’s brain development, which can have serious and lasting repercussions. In adults, a deficiency results in an accumulation of fat in the liver“.

In France, the ANSES recommendations are 400 mg per day for men and women over 18 years old. This figure rises to 480 mg per day for pregnant women and 500 mg per day for breastfeeding women.
