Air traffic noise, for people who live near airports, does more than drown out the sound of a conversation from time to time or interrupt a night’s sleep. For the first time, an American study has made the link between airplane noise and… obesity. This nuisance would in fact be likely not only to lead to a higher BMI, and therefore to increase the risks of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes or hypertension, according to this research carried out by researchers from the Boston University School of Public Health and Oregon State University (OSU).

And it doesn’t have to be a deafening noise. The effects on the Body Mass Index of adults would be felt from 45 decibels, a level just above that of the cozy environment of a library (40 dB) and a little less than the noise of a conversation at home (50dB). This would correspond to accommodation located 35 km from a major airport in the United States. And the highest BMIs were detected among residents near airports exposed to sound levels of 55 dB or more, according to this research, carried out over a long period of 15 years, among 75,000 people living around the 90 main American airports. The study, published in the journal Environment International, was also funded by the Federal Aviation Administration. And its conclusions support the existence of a solid link between nuisances (…)
